Organic skin care can get very expensive, especially when buying all organic products. There is however a way round this - create your very own organic skin care products! It is easy and fun, and should save you money.

Organic Face Masks - for different skin types:

 

Organic Face Masks - For Normal Skin:

1. Half medium ripe organic banana

2. few chunks of organic cucumber

3. slice of skinned organic sharon fruit (persimmon)

4. 1 slice of organic watermelon

5. 3 tablespoons of thick organic honey

 

Organic Face Masks - For Dry Skin:

1. 1 small portion of organic carrot, melon or avocado

2. 3 tablespoons of organic yogurt

3. 1 tablespoon of organic honey

 

Organic Face Masks - For Oily Skin:

1. 5 organic strawberries or a small bowl of seedless grapes

2. a few slices of skinned organic grapefruit

3. Organic rice flour

 

Organic Face Masks - For Blemished Skin (lightening Effect):

1. 1 medium ripe organic tomato

2. 1 tablespoon of freshly squeezed organic lemon juice

3. Organic oatmeal or rice flour

 

Organic Face Masks - For Acne prone/Teenage Skin:

1. 1 organic egg white

2. small bowl of fresh organic mint leaves

3. few drops of organic french lavender aromatherapy oil

4. Organic rice flour

 

Organic Face Masks - For Sallow Skin (Darkening Effect):

1. half a cup of strong organic tea

2. Organic brewers yeast

3. 1 drop of organic almond oil

4. Organic corn flour

 

Instructions for all the above face masks:

1. Mix the Ingredients together with a fork (blending and mashing), adding flour or oatmeal to create a consistency thick enough to be evenly applied.

2. Avoid getting into the eyes.

3. Leave for 30 mins, and then rinse off thoroughly.

NOTE - Always spot test on a tiny skin patch to check for allergies before applying mask.

Apple Zinger Facial Mask
(oily skin that is acne prone)

Ingredients

1 medium size organic apple (grated)
5 tablespoons of organic honey

Instructions

Mix the grated apple and mix with honey to make a mask. Smooth over skin then let sit for 10 minutes, rinse off with cool water.

Honey - Bees may travel as far as 55,000 miles and visit more than two million flowers to gather enough nectar to make just a pound of honey. Banana Supreme Facial Mask
(dry skin)

Ingredients

2 medium organic bananas
organic honey optional

Instructions

Mash bananas with a fork...don't over mash or it will be too runny. Add honey* if desired. Smooth over skin, let sit for 10 minutes, rinse off with cool water.

Properties

Bananas are eaten fresh and used in salads, desserts, breads, and candy. Bananas are a good source of ascorbic acid (Vit. C), Vitamin B 6 , and potassium.

Carrot Top Facial Mask
(normal - oily skin)

Ingredients

2 - 3 large organic carrots
4 1/2 tablespoons organic honey

Instructions

Cook carrots, then mash. Mix with honey. Apply gently to the skin, wait 10 minutes. Rinse off with cool water.

Properties

Carrots are native to Afghanistan. They were first cultivated in 500 BC in the Mediterranean regions. In approximately the 1600's they were introduced in Europe and England; ladies used the feathery tops as decoration for hats and wore them in their hair. Carrots grow in the wild and are more commonly known as Queen Ann's Lace. They are very high in vitamin A and a source of vitamin C, folacin and potassium Source - BC Vegetable Marketing Commission

Banana Bread Masque

Ingredients

12 really ripe mashed organic banana - moisturising
2 Tbsp. ground organic oats - soothing
Organic milk or cream, add as necessary - softening
Pinch organic nutmeg - antiseptic
2 Tbsp. organic whole wheat flour - antioxidant

Instructions

Whip Ingredients together, adding cream or oat flour as necessary to get a smooth, paste-like consistency. Spread on clean face and leave for 5-10 minutes, then rinse thoroughly and pat dry..

Ground Oats - use rolled oats and a clean coffee grinder or blender to grind the flakes to a fine powder

Properties

Oatmeal is highly absorptive, hypoallergenic, and helps to soften skin. Oats have the best amino acid balance of all the cereal grains (amino acids work as water-binding agents in skin care products). Oats have also been clinically shown to help heal dry, itchy skin. Oat grains and straw appear in shampoos, dusting powders, moisturisers, and cleansing bars and more.

Bay Clay Facial Mask
(for acne prone skin)

Ingredients

4 tablespoons French clay
5 dried organic bay leaves
1 cup distilled water

Instructions

Place the bay leaves into a cup of boiled water, let cool. Strain but keep the liquid. Slowly add the bay liquid to the clay until it is a fairly thick mixture. Dab onto your skin then allow to dry for about 15 - 20 minutes. Rinse off with warm water.

Properties

French Clay has excellent absorbent powers that works to remove oils and toxins from your skin. It stimulates the skin, revitalises the complexion and tightens your pores. French Clay is excellent for problem skin.

Fresh bay leaves are very strongly aromatic, but also quite bitter. High-quality bay leaves are easily recognised not only by their strong aroma, but also by their bright green colour. The greener the colour, the better the quality. The essential oil from Bay leaves (0.8 to 3%) contains mostly 1,8 cineol (50%); furthermore, eugenol, acetyl eugenol, methyl eugenol, a- and ß-pinene, phellandrene, linalool, geraniol and terpineol are found.

Distilled Water - It is a process whereby the water is boiled, and the pure steam is re-condensed to water again, leaving behind all heavy metals and contaminants, and killing all bacteria and viruses.

Sweet Strawberry Facial Mask
(oily skin)

Ingredients

8 - 9 whole organic strawberries
3 tablespoons organic honey

Instructions

Using a fork mash strawberries into a pulp, add honey. Mix. Don't over blend or it will be runny. Apply directly to the skin, let sit for a few minutes then rinse off.

Properties

Strawberries - The Romans prized wild strawberries for their medicinal Properties. Ounce for ounce, strawberries have more Vitamin C than citrus fruit. According to the American Cancer Society, foods rich in Vitamin C may lower the risk of cancers of the gastrointestinal tract. Source - American Cancer Society

Honey - A Sweet Treat for Skin

All-natural honey has been used a beauty product since the days of Cleopatra and it continues to be used today in manufactured and homemade products for skin and hair care. Honey is naturally hydrating and non-irritating.

Here are a few honey facial and body scrubs recipes that you can make at home:

Honey Cleansing Scrub

Ingredients

1 Tablespoon organic honey
2 Tablespoons finely ground organic almonds
1/2 teaspoon organic lemon juice

Directions

Mix all Ingredients
Rub gently onto face
Rinse off with warm water.

 

Just Peachy Facial Mask
(normal skin)

Ingredients

1 medium organic peach
1 tablespoons organic honey
organic oatmeal

Instructions

Cook peach until its soft, mash with a fork, add honey and oatmeal until its a thick consistency. Apply to skin. Let sit for 10 minutes, rinse well with cool water.

Peaches, plums and nectarines contain large amounts of alpha-hydroxy acids, or AHAs. AHAs are a buzzword in the world of exfoliants. Like most 'discoveries' AHAs, in one form or another, have actually been used for centuries. The gentle exfoliation of fruit peels speeds up cell renewal, leading to healthier skin tone. Gentle Facial Cleanser

Ingredients

1/2 cup organic oatmeal or cornmeal
Organic plain yogurt (add enough yogurt to form a paste)

Instructions

For a gentle facial cleanser mix Ingredients, smooth over entire face avoiding eye area. Wash off with warm water.

Organic Skin Toners:
Rose Skin Toner

Ingredients

3 1/2 cups witch hazel
1/2 cup dried organic rose petals
5 sprigs of fresh organic rosemary

Instructions

Mix Ingredients together making sure it is all blended well. Strain. Splash on your face after cleaning skin.

Properties

Witch Hazel - this natural extract from the witch hazel plant gently, but effectively cleanses pores deeply to remove the last trace of dirt, oil and makeup leaving skin feeling soft, moisturised and refreshed.

Rosemary - stimulates circulation to skin and scalp. Great toning and astringent Properties. Helps clear and revitalise congested or sluggish skin.

Organic Skin Lotions:
Soft Skin Lotion

Ingredients

1 cup dried organic camomile
4 tablespoons organic honey
1 cup organic milk
8 teaspoons organic wheat germ

Instructions

Steep camomile in milk for a few hours. Strain, keeping liquid. Add honey and wheat germ to liquid mixture. Blend well. Place in a bottle. Refrigerate any used portions. Keeps up to a week.

Properties

Camomile - is one of the most used herbs in the world. It is used widely in cosmetics particularly in shampoos and rinses especially for blond hair which it lightens. It is also used in soaps and creams to soothe and soften the skin.

Milk - milk contains lactic acid, a natural alpha hydroxy acid that helps the skin exfoliate dead skin cells away from the surface of the skin. It is also very hydrating and soothing to the complexion.

Wheat Germ - is high in protein, vitamin E and B, which makes this ingredient nourishing, soothing and helpful in preventing free radical damage. It's very slight granular texture, gives a sensitive or dry skin a wonderful, gentle exfoliation.

Organic Facial Scrubs:
Yogurt Walnut Scrub

Ingredients

1/4 cup organic plain yogurt
1/4 cup organic walnuts (very finely grounded)

Instructions

Mix Ingredients together. Wet your face then gently work the scrub into your skin. Rinse off with warm water.

Properties

Walnuts - During Medieval times, walnuts were considered a medicine. A potion containing walnut leaves was used to treat muscular aches and pains and walnuts were believed to soothe the digestive system.

Later, in the 16th and 17th centuries, herbal treatments became official medical practice under the "Doctrine of Signatures," and various plants were prescribed due to their resemblance to a particular body part. Hence, the walnut, with its visual likeness to the human brain, was used to treat head ailments, boost intellect and calm emotions.

Even today, in Asian cultures, the walnut is considered a brain food; college students there munch on walnuts by the handful before exams, hoping to boost their scores. Source - walnut.org

Simply Sweet Honey Face Scrub

Makes 4 treatments

Ingredients

4 medium-sized organic strawberries
1 small organic cactus fruit
1/4 cup organic oatmeal, uncooked
3 tsp. organic sugar
3 tsp. organic honey
2 tsp. organic green tea

Directions

Wash strawberries and remove stems. Peel cactus fruit and discard skin. Slice in quarters, set aside. Using food processor or blender combine oatmeal, strawberries, cactus fruit, green tea and honey. Mix until pureed. Place in glass or rubber mixing bowl. Stir in sugar until completely mixed. Apply small amount to cheeks, forehead, chin and neck. Using finger tips and circular motions work product into skin. Repeat. Apply more product as needed until entire face and neck are covered. May be left on skin for 10 minutes mask or removed immediately. Rinse completely using tepid or cool water. Store remaining scrub in covered container in refrigerator for up to one week.

Organic Body Scrubs:
Sweethearts' Chocolate Honey Scrub

Makes 2 treatments

Ingredients

6 Tbsp. unsweetened organic chocolate, grated
2 cups organic honey
2 cups organic kosher salt
1/2 cup organic grapeseed oil

Directions

In rubber mixing bowl, combine honey and grapeseed oil. Stir in chocolate and salt mixing completely. Consistency should be grainy and thick. Apply scrub to skin and gently massage all over the body. Remove with warm damp towels or rinse in shower.

Serving Suggestions

Can be substituted for dry cocoa powder.

Benefits - Increases circulation and aids in ridding body of toxins. Honey provides moisturising effect as well as fights damaging free radicals.

Oat and Brown Sugar Scrub

Ingredients

2 Tbsp. organic ground oats
2 tsp. organic brown sugar
2 Tbsp. organic aloe vera
1 tsp. organic lemon juice

Instructions

Mix all Ingredients in a clean bowl until you have a smooth paste. Gently massage onto damp skin, and rinse off with warm water. You can triple the recipe for a fantastic smoothing body treatment.

Morning Buzz Body Scrub

Makes 1-2 treatments

Ingredients

1/4 cup freshly ground organic coffee
1/4 cup organic buttermilk
2 Tbsp. organic wheat germ
2 Tbsp. organic honey
1 Tbsp. organic grapeseed oil
1 organic egg white

Directions

In mixing bowl, combine buttermilk, honey, grapeseed oil and egg white, mix thoroughly. Slowly add coffee and wheat germ being careful not to clot or clump. Scrub should be smooth and creamy but with a slight grit. Allow to stand. Apply all over in shower or bath using a washcloth or body sponge to aid in exfoliation. Rinse completely. Towel dry and apply moisturiser. Chill remaining scrub if necessary.

Organic Body Cleansers:
Body Cleanser

Every 2 hours drink a cup of hot water with lemon juice. It flushes out built up toxins.

Sea Salts also draws toxins out of the body. Make a paste of sea salt & water and rub onto your body before a shower, allow it to sit for at least a minute before washing off. Feels refreshing.

Properties

Sea Salt - contains magnesium, zinc, calcium, potassium and iodine, together with minute amounts of other trace elements.

Lemon - Did you know that the word "ascorbic," as in ascorbic acid (the name for vitamin C), means "no scurvy"?
